Rebuilding Killai

The small village of Muzhukkuthurai, located in the southern province of Tamil Nadu, on the Bay of Bengal, was an ordinary fishing community of 161 poor, hardworking families. When the Tsunami hit on December 26, 2004, all of that changed. Thanks to Pat Smith and over 80 volunteers from the Commonwealth of Kentucky, who donated their time, talents and treasures from August through December 2005, those families are now rebuilding their lives in new Habitat for Humanity homes. One elderly woman was quoted as saying to Pat, “I am glad the Tsunami came, because it brought you to us.”

The Kentucky Mississippi Partnership—Rebuilding the Gulf Coast

In August 2006, Kentuckians began traveling to the Gulf Coast, rebuilding homes for families who lost everything during Hurricane Katrina. This was the vision of our dear friend Pat Smith. Over Thanksgiving, 200 volunteers from across the Commonwealth celebrated the life of Pat by convening in Gulfport to finish this project in Pat’s memory. They worked, played, laughed, cried and celebrated the life of Pat over a Thanksgiving Day meal. On December 9, 2006, 13 families received the keys to their new Habitat homes.  They are Home for Christmas!
